    Online Eduatinment Videos - Recontextualizing and Reconceptualizing Expert Discourse in a Participatory Web-culture

    The online world is becoming more and more edutainment, where learning, getting informed and entertained seem to be part of one and the same activity. As a result of this current fascination, people are drawn increasingly towards a new genre, i.e. free online 20-minute long lectures that borrow from film and storytelling techniques, that are offering an engaging series of speeches and even courses in many different scientific subjects. Though English as a lingua franca is still the dominant language of the internet, as a result of a growing new trend, namely crowdsourcing translation, knowledge dissemination is further enhanced and is now reaching further into many different cultures, allowing even the so-called minor languages to regain dignity and circulate, by engaging native speakers from different cultural backgrounds. This paper offers an overview on the phenomenon of online edutainment considering the role played by collaborative users who not only enjoy but also create and translate content. In addition, a case study focused on TED Talks allows a more in depth analysis of the new genre and the increasing need for subtitling scripts

    THE SHORT FORM RESHAPED: EMAIL, BLOG, SMS, AND MSN IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY E-PISTOLARY NOVELS

    Brevity in literature is a complex issue: \u201cshort stories are short in various ways and for various reasons\u201d (Friedman 1994, 18). Telling a short story or telling a story through a collection of short texts are two quite distinct narrative practices, both in designing and writing fiction. Nonetheless, the genre of the short story and that of epistolary fiction share a hybrid nature, a \u201cpower to combine richness with concision\u201d (Shaw 1983, 11), a control over the reader, an inclination for spoken forms, and \u201cthe tension between closural and anticlosural features\u201d (Lohafer 1994, 301). \u201cSeen as a form which arouses a feeling of wonder at finding so much expressed within such narrow boundaries, the short story is an intrinsically witty genre which has affinities with a wide range of artistic strategies for compressing meaning\u201d (Shaw 1983, 11). Twenty-first century e-pistolary novels in book form make the picture even more complex as they are works of fiction of varied lengths, displaying and combining various types of digital and electronic short forms enabled by technological innovation, which started in the mid-90s. Brevity for these collections of e-texts is as much a trait as a technical constraint. Before moving any further, the spelling of epistolarity with a hyphen, i.e. e-pistolarity or e-pistolary novels, is worth a digression. It is a choice intended to highlight the difference between the traditional epistolary genre\u2014a fiction partly or entirely based on a typical paper-based exchange between two or more correspondents\u2014and literary works that consider new forms, modes, and channels of exchange. The novels discussed in this work rely only on text typologies (e-texts) produced by means of new technologies and new means of communication, such as email both via PC and/or mobile phone, texting via mobile phone (SMS), chat services via PC first (MSN) and later via mobile, eBay entries, excerpts from forums and blogs, or online papers and magazines

    Diagnóstico quanto à segurança e higiene do trabalho em três canteiros de obras da cidade de Florianópolis

Engenharia Civil.O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a aplicação das Normas Regulamentadoras nos canteiros de obra da região da grande Florianópolis. As principais Normas utilizadas foram as NR-4, NR-5, NR-6, NR-7, NR-9 e NR-18. Para tal, buscou-se identificar 3 empresas que tivessem mesmas características e possuíssem obras em estágios semelhantes de trabalho. Foram aplicados um questionário e um checklist para avaliar a segurança e saúde dos trabalhadores durante o desenvolvimento de suas atividades laborais. Ao fim do trabalho foi possível ter uma melhor percepção das condições atuais de segurança na construção civil de empresas de pequeno a médio porte. No geral, foi percebida a falta de preocupação com equipamentos de trabalho em altura, inclusive uso indevido de equipamentos, falta de organização, limpeza e de treinamentos e a ausência de projetos de verificação estrutural. Foram propostas medidas a fim de melhorar ou até eliminar os riscos encontrados nas obras visitas

    The clustering properties of high-redshift passive galaxies

    We investigate the clustering properties of 3<z<5 candidate passive galaxies from the Merlin et al. (2019) sample residing in the GOODS-North (35 sources) and GOODS-South (33 sources) fields. Within the large uncertainties due to the paucity of sources we do not detect clustering signal in GOODS-North, while this is present in GOODS-South, highlighting the importance of the effects of cosmic variance. The estimated correlation length in GOODS-South is r_0=12^+4_-5 Mpc, while the estimated minimum mass for a halo capable to host one of such high-redshift quenched galaxies is log10(M_min/M_sun) =13.0\pm 0.3, once also the constraints from their space density are taken into account. Both values are compatible with the results from GOODS-North. Putting the above findings in a cosmological context, these suggest no evolution of the dark matter content of the hosts of passive galaxies during the past 12.5 Gyr, i.e. during more than 90% of the age of the Universe.     FUS mutant human motoneurons display altered transcriptome and microRNA pathways with implications for ALS pathogenesis

    The FUS gene has been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). FUS is a ubiquitous RNA-binding protein, and the mechanisms leading to selective motoneuron loss downstream of ALS-linked mutations are largely unknown. We report the transcriptome analysis of human purified motoneurons, obtained from FUS wild-type or mutant isogenic induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Gene ontology analysis of differentially expressed genes identified significant enrichment of pathways previously associated to sporadic ALS and other neurological diseases. Several microRNAs (miRNAs) were also deregulated in FUS mutant motoneurons, including miR-375, involved in motoneuron survival. We report that relevant targets of miR-375, including the neural RNA-binding protein ELAVL4 and apoptotic factors, are aberrantly increased in FUS mutant motoneurons. Characterization of transcriptome changes in the cell type primarily affected by the disease contributes to the definition of the pathogenic mechanisms of FUS-linked ALS

    Efecto de la suplementación con lino sobre parámetros productivos y de calidad de carne, en animales en pastoreo

    En la actualidad Argentina necesita incrementar su producción de carne vacuna de forma tal que le permita lograr adecuados saldos exportables que se traduzcan en un mayor ingreso de divisas al sector. Los saldos de carne exportable en nuestro país son pocos como consecuencia del elevado consumo per capita (59 kg/hab. año-1, CICCRA, 2012) y de la caída en producción que se observó en los últimos años consecuencia de la convergencia de diversos factores. Entre estos factores se destaca el impacto que tuvo una gran sequía (2008-2009) que afectó a los sistemas ganaderos del país que se encontraban al límite de su capacidad de carga. Esto último como consecuencia de la presión que la agricultura generó sobre los sistemas ganaderos. Es así que en la búsqueda de una mayor sustentabilidad los sistemas ganaderos se encuentran en un proceso de intensificación, que se da principalmente por un incremento en el uso de suplementaciones estratégicas, llegando inclusive a encierres totales en determinados momentos del año. Estos cambios en los sistemas de producción, impactan sobre diversos aspectos que hacen a la calidad del producto final, la carne. Una de las características de la carne que es alterada por modificaciones de la dieta es la composición de ácidos grasos. Estos cambios que se producen por modificaciones en la dieta adquieren especial relevancia porque impactan directamente sobre la salud del consumidor y porque entre los consumidores existe una creciente preocupación al respecto (Schor et al, 2007). Entre los lineamientos que la Organización Mundial para la Salud (OMS, 2003) dió en su informe sobre el consumo de grasas, con el objetivo de reducir el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares se destaca: (a) la necesidad de reducir el consumo total de grasas, en especial las saturadas, (b) incrementar el consumo de grasas poliinsaruradas (AGPI), (c) mantener la relación de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGPI) n-6:n-3 por debajo de 4. En base a estos lineamientos y los perfiles de ácidos grasos observados en carne vacuna proveniente de distintos sistemas de alimentación (Daley, 2010; Duckett et al., 2009ª) la carne proveniente de sistemas pastoriles podría considerarse como un producto más saludable. A su vez, la carne de animales terminados a pasto presentaría una mayor proporción entre sus ácidos grasos del isómero cis-9, trans-11 del ácido linolenico conjugado (CLA) y de su precursor, el trans-11 ácido vaccenico (TVA); dos ácidos grasos con potencial anticancerígeno y con propiedades antiaterogénicas (Bhattacharya et al., 2006; Lee et al., 2005; Tricon et al., 2005). En general, las alteraciones en el perfil de ácidos grasos que se generan con las estrategias de suplementación de terminación se tienden a reducir las proporciones de los ácidos grasos beneficiosos (TVA, CLA, y AGPI n-3) e incrementar la relación AGPI n-6: n-3. (Chicatún et al., 2006; Depetris et al., 2006a; Garcia et al., 2008; Pavan, 2006; Schor et al., 2008). Se hipotetiza que la adición de una fuente de aceites ricos en AGPI n-3 al grano de maíz suplementado a animales en pastoreo puede contrarrestar los efectos adversos de la suplementación con grano sobre el perfil de ácidos grasos. Es así que en el presente trabajo se evalúa el efecto de la adición de semilla de lino como fuente de AGPI n-3 al grano de maíz de novillos terminados en condiciones pastoriles a dos pesos de faena. Por otra parte, dado que la suplementación con aceites puede afectar negativamente los procesos de fermentación ruminal (Jenkins, 1993) y la digestibilidad total in vivo de la fibra de animales en pastoreo (Pavan et al, 2006 y Pavan y Duckett, 2007) se evalúa el efecto de la adición de semilla de lino al grano de maíz suplementado sobre la respuesta productiva de los animales y las características de la carcasa. Finalmente, dado que con la adición de semilla de lino se busca incrementar la proporción de AGPI n-3 en los lípidos de la carne y que este tipo de ácidos grasos tiene una menor estabilidad oxidativa que ácidos grasos con un menor grado de insaturación se evalúa también el impacto de la adición de semilla de lino al grano de maíz suplementado sobre la oxidativa lipídica de la carne luego de distintos períodos de maduración de la misma en condiciones anaeróbicas.Fil: Fanego, N..     Identification markers based on fatty acid composition to differentiate between roasted Arabica and Canephora (Robusta) coffee varieties in mixtures

    Commercial coffee is available as a mixture of two varieties of coffee beans, namely Arabica, which is more expensive, and Canephora (Robusta), less expensive. To assess the correspondence between the composition indicated on the label and the real composition of commercially available coffee, it would be desirable to be able to differentiate between the two varieties. This would also help to avoid any possible commercial frauds. This work identifies parameters based on the fatty acid composition to differentiate between Arabica and Canephora coffee in a mixture. Total monounsaturated fatty acids (SMUFA), linolenic acid (cis18:3n–3) concentration, the 18:0/cis18:1n–9 ratio, and the SMUFA/SSFA ratio could be used to determine the relative amounts of Arabica and Canephora in a coffee blend
